We are extremely delighted to have American world expert in play Peter Gray coming to De Vrije Ruimte to give a lecture. For the ones that don’t already know him he is the author of the book “Free to learn”.
When I found his articles some years ago I understood so clear how important it actually is all the free playing that happens in our school, everything Peter Gray talks about you can witness it in De Vrije Ruimte! It is actually fascinating. There are so many essential emotional and social skills that young people should develop to thrive as adults and Peter Gray explains how kids do this through free play.

He will discuss play and why game plays such an important role from an evolutionary point of view. How children educate themselves, through play and exploration, when they are free to do so.
Peter Gray will explain the specific skills kids learn from playing freely with other kids. To negotiate, to deal with fear in a way that they can handle it, to deal with strong emotions, to communicate, to empathize and much more. And how all these skills will be the ones that prepare them to thrive as adults and in their relationships.
Peter Gray is a research professor of psychology at Boston College who has conducted and published research in neuroendocrinology, developmental psychology, anthropology, and education.
He is the Author of “Psychology” an introduction book used by hundreds of thousands of psychology students and “Free To Learn: why releasing the instinct to play will cause our children to become happier, more self-reliant and continue to learn throughout their lives.”
